Arsenal Triumph Fueled by Bench Players and Rugby Union Inspiration
Mikel Arteta claims that the "finishers" in his squad could be even more crucial than first-team players this season—a philosophy he reveals borrowing from the sport of rugby.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard both found the net—and set up each other—after entering as second-half substitutes to secure a 2-0 victory for Arsenal against Athletic Club in the first UEFA elite competition match.
Recent Struggles and Arteta's Faith
Martinelli has faced a tough period recently, struggling for consistency and being relegated to substitute duty, with new signing the English winger preferred on the left wing.
Trossard, meanwhile, has made only a handful of cameos so far after featuring regularly during the previous term.
Arteta stressed that starting on the bench does not diminish a player's importance, citing similarities with the rugby terminology of "finishers".
"They are just as crucial, if not more so," he stated. "The finishers will prove decisive this season on occasion than the starters."
Squad Depth and Missing Stars
The North London side are currently missing key players such as the captain, the England international, and the German playmaker due to injuries, while William Saliba was only fit enough for a place on bench.
This has forced the manager to turn to recent additions earlier than planned, with five of them named in the lineup against Spanish outfit.
He admitted that leaving players out is emotionally challenging, but applauded the impact of the duo after initially benching them.
"Very pleased since it is hard emotionally to leave players out," he expressed. "Each occasion you announce the starting eleven, you let down a number of players."
Squad Unity and Morale Lift
Martinelli, who has been a key figure under the manager, faced a dip in form that sparked fan debate about his role in the team.
The winger was aware of external opinions and it dented his confidence, despite scoring double figures last season—featuring a standout strike in the Champions League last eight encounter against Real Madrid.
Arteta has always shown faith him in important matches and was delighted to see the attacker make the difference in this victory.
"He fully deserves it," said Arteta. "I admire Gabi. His attitude, dedication, optimism—everything he offers for the team."
Teammates rushed to celebrate with him after his goal, with Riccardo Calafiori gesturing toward the player's name in front of the away fans.
"That shows unity," Arteta continued. "That's why I love working with them every day. The way they look out for one another is genuine."
"They desire the best for their peers and value someone who puts in the effort every single day like Gabi does."
"I was certain that Gabi was going to react positively. You challenge him, he elevates to the occasion. These are moments that will hopefully boost his self-assurance—he remains an outstanding player."
