Prominent opposition figure Rahul Gandhi has launched a fresh attack against India's election commission, alleging its top official Gyanesh Kumar of “defending those destroying democratic values”.

Charges About Voter List Tampering

Gandhi stated that electors' identities had been purposely removed or added in registration databases to benefit the governing BJP in crucial regional polls.

He insisted that his rigging allegations were supported by “conclusive evidence” and that the electoral authority had ignored repeated complaints despite multiple complaints from his Congress party.

Concrete Cases Presented

At the media event, Gandhi referenced the Aland voting region in Karnataka, claiming that more than six thousand electors had been stricken from electoral rolls in Congress strongholds.

He asserted that primarily impacted voters belonged to marginalized communities who were traditional party voters.

Gandhi also raised concerns about the Rajura voting district in Maharashtra, where he stated nearly 7,000 fictitious entries had been added to voter lists.

Authority's Reply

The Election Commission rejected these allegations as “without merit” and explained that voter names cannot be deleted online by unauthorized persons.

The body added that it had initiated legal action regarding suspicious activities in the Aland constituency during 2023.

Broader Context

These new accusations form part of an continuing sequence of election integrity concerns raised by opposition parties regarding past election proceedings.

Numerous previous electoral authorities have endorsed the need for openness and credibility in the election mechanism of the world's most populous democracy.
