Student Society President-Elect Ousted Due to Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.
The vote against George Abaraonye reached the required two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.
Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any representative acting for the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Ongoing Dispute
The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The statement warned that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
